It was my decision to cancel the Dec meeting at the Livonia Civic Center because of the inclement weather. I am sorry if this unconvinced anyone but it did not seem prudent to encourage people to get into their cars and drive to the Livonia library for a meeting. I, along with the rest of you, did miss the wonderful holiday tales that I know would have been told, perhaps you can look at the schedule at the end of the Newsletter and find a hole where tellers are needed and come and tell us either your holiday tales or ‘What I did instead of coming to the Dec meeting tale.’

Let Gail Gilman know when you will tell and we can look forward to a whole bunch of new stories! Stay warm and safe! And see all of you in January!

Loretta

Wow a big empty space! Well I can’t resist that!

The year I turned 13 my father got a call from our travel agent Maria saying she had tickets for a sailing for Italy that would get us there just before Christmas. Always willing to do things on impulse of course my dad took the tickets.

We sailed five days later and docked in Le Havre France early in the morning in the cold of December 23rd.

We took the train from there with all our baggage in tow and arrived completely unexpected –of course my parent’s had not called or sent a telegram because such a thing would have caused a great deal of stress –a telegram from America after all, could only be bad news. My Zio Dino was the Cappostazzione (Station Master) at the Pontassive train station where we arrived about 9:00 p.m. –just as they were sitting down to dinner.

We didn’t knock on the door –the kitchen was at the other end of the house –but just walked in towards the kitchen shouting Buon Natale! as we entered.

Everyone was thrilled to see us –and my father, mother, older brother, younger sister and I were all welcomed in to joyous shouts. Places were made at the table – more pasta was put on the fire and my Zia Rovena and her family were called to come over as Maurizio e’ arrivatto! (Maurizio –my dad had arrived!).

Zia and Zio and of course their boys came in short order and brought the champagne and a wonderful Pandoro cake that was to be for Christmas dinner. Since the 23rd is my birthday it seemed only right to have it that night.

So after an amazingly wonderful meal full of hugs and tears that we were there for Christmas we all had champagne and Pandoro to celebrate. Zio Dino was not even upset with me when I, as the birthday girl, popped the cork of the champagne bottle and hit him square on the head with it. Everyone laughed and Zio told me it must be good luck to be hit with a birthday cork! And you know I think he was right because the whole family had a wonderful holiday season which is what I wish for you and yours!

Buon Natale! e’ Buon Cappoanno!
